ROMAN REMAKES OF GREEK ORIGINALS

The remaking or reworking of Greek originals is one of the most interesting aspects of the internalization of Greek art which occurred in the Roman world.
Beyond the reinterpretation of the originals, the remakes have the great value of being often the only evidence we can see of the works of great artists like Phidias (490-430 BC), Lysippos (390-306), Myron (V century) , Policleto (V century), Praxiteles (IV century), Kalamis (V century), as most of the originals have disappeared.
As a matter of fact we have none original by Lysippos and Policleto, only one original of Praxiteles, nothing by Myron.

So here's to you:

Aphrodite by Phidias, fifth century BC;

Ares of the school of Phidias;

Apollo school of Phidias;

the famous bitch by Lysippos.

Of the fifth century is the ephebus by Policleto said "Westmacott" from the name of the English sculptor who made a copy in 1800;

Marsyas of Myron of the fifth century;

Hermes by Kalamis of the fifth century;

Hermes Richelieu attributed to Prassitele of the fourth century;

Eros Chigi of the fourth century;

Apollo Linceo of Praxiteles;

a centaur wonderful expression of Hellenistic art (III - I century BC).

And finally a girl of Pergamum of the second century B.C.
