s. agnese in agone

S. Agnese in Agone Church is a very ancient one, the first little building was arranged between the ruins of the stadium’s fornices, later in the XII century Pope Callisto II converted it into a small basilica.

The present look is owed to Pope Innocenzo X Pamphili who commissioned Carlo Rainaldi to design a new church; anyway, since the Pope was not satisfied of Rainaldi work, he commissioned Borromini.

The internal has a Greek cross shape, six altars are arranged in the walls. The first one (getting in right hand): “ the death of S. Alessio”, was made by Giovanni Francesco Rossi, the second one is: “S. Agnese” by Ercole Ferrata, the third one is:”Holy Family and angels” by Domenico Guidi, the fourth is: “S. Cecilia martyrdom” by Ercole Antonio Raggi, the fifth is: “S. Sebastiano” by Pietro Paolo Campi, the sixth is: “S. Eustachio between the wild beasts” by Melchiorre Caffà.

Ercole Ferrata and Domenico Guidi, the great Algardi’s pupils, were commissioned, but they had to work “according to the Master’s designed, who in the while was death (1653).

Innocenzo X tomb was made by Giovanni Battista Maini.

The dome fresco “Gloria del Paradiso” is a work by Ciro Ferri.

The wonderful pendentives (1665), are a Baciccia (Giovan Battista Gaulli) masterpiece.

Getting down the underground you can see the remains of the Domitian Stadium and a work (1653), by Algardi “the miracle of S. Agnese’ s hair”.

The sacristy (1666) was designed by Borromini.
