Carlo Maderno, Domenico Fontana ’s nephew and pupil, was in turn teacher to Borromini, also a relative, and who out of gratitude asked to be buried near Fontana’s tomb in San Giovanni dei Fiorentini.
He was born in 1556 in Bissone, in the Ticino district, and died in Rome in 1629.

Like his uncle, Maderno worked tirelessly. Among his numerous works in Rome we can recall:
- The rebuilding of the façade of the church of Santa Susanna
- The façade of the church of San Giacomo in August (Incurabili)
- The church of San Domenico
- Villa Ludovisi (Torlonia)
- The dome and façade of the church of Sant’Andrea della Valle
- The interior of the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria
- The dome of the church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini
- Villa Mondragone
- The church of Sant’Ignazio
- The replanning and construction of palazzo Barberini
- The main doorway, Paoline Chapel, Sala dei Corazzieri and gardens of Palazzo Quirinale
- Palazzo Rospigliosi (Pallavicini-Borghese).
Nevertheless, he is mostly famous for the façade of St. Peter’s, which he built after the death of Giacomo della Porta, whom he replaced as director of the “Fabbrica di San Pietro”.
